Gisèle Vienne, the philosophy student turned puppeteer turned choreographer, spent the 1990s in East Berlin going to raves. “There was an old department store that was half bombed out,” she recently explained. “It was a whole experience. You would party in this mesmerizing architecture experience. Sensorial.” Vienne has brought nightclubs—not simply partying, but an artistic multi-sensory experience—to Tokyo, São Paulo, and now Brooklyn. The 90-minute show features 15 dancers who drink, fight, flail, and trash the stage. The lighting and music move dizzyingly fast, speeding up time, then slow down until every minute feels like 10. While the dancers don’t speak, each has a narrative that unfolds over the evening. —Jensen Davis
