Cristian Chironi: Manhattan Stop

Installation view of Cristian Chironi: Manhattan Stop, at Morton St. Partners, in New York.

May 26 – Aug 13, 2022
16 Morton St Garage, New York, NY 10014, United States

With “Manhattan Stop,” the multi-disciplinary artist Cristian Chironi continues a story he’s been telling since 2021. What began as an homage to the artistic friendship between the Italian sculptor and architect Costantino Nivola (1911–1988) and the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier (1887–1965), has taken on a life of its own. Nivola’s car is the vehicle for this story. Nivola was Sardinian, and, like many Italians, he owned a Fiat 127 Special, which was very dear to his heart. Thinking of Nivola’s emotional attachment to the car, Chironi decided to drive the same make, model, and year of Fiat across the globe, and invited different co-pilots from different countries on each leg of the journey. As he drove, he recorded elaborate travel stories and made video diaries. Upon his return to New York, he set to work on paintings that channel emotions from the car trips. In this exhibition, organized in collaboration with Magazzino Italian Art, these travel mementos are on view, along with Chironi’s Chameleon Fiat 127—delightfully color-blocked. —Elena Clavarino
