“People think our work is monumental because it’s art,” said the installation artist Christo, “but human beings do much bigger things: they build giant airports, highways for thousands of miles, much, much bigger than what we create.” Though he spoke of his work modestly, the visionary Bulgarian was a monumental man in all respects, and news of his recent death—on May 31, 2020—shook the world. For most of his life Christo worked with his wife and artistic partner, Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009. The couple created extraordinary installations that involved the world’s most important landmarks: 25 years ago, they wrapped Berlin’s Reichstag, marking the city. To celebrate the couple, this exhibition at the PalaisPopulaire includes early objects, large-format drawing tableaux, as well as editions and prints. —E.C.
