As a Black German, the choreographer-provocateur Joana Tischkau knows from being gawked at like a tourist attraction in her own country. She has made a practice of examining how a white majority works out its own issues around authenticity by exoticizing the likes of her. Hence, Trapicana, whose point of departure is the storied Havana nightclub that even a revolution couldn’t stop. If the target seems too easy, Tischkau enlists a quartet of collaborators to mix and layer things up: the Brooklyn-born, Basel-based, and street dance–inclined Jeremy Nedd; the Berlin voguer Sophie Yukiko; and, to do the dancing, the enterprising, world-traveling Havana troupe Malpaso. Together they will imagine the Tropicana look—mile-high feather headdresses, glitter pasties, and little else—to a Trap beat, which manages to be cold and hot at once, like a digital starburst.
