Three years ago, plans for a major exhibition on Ghenghis Khan fell apart after the Chinese government barred the use of certain words, among them, “Ghenghis Khan,” “empire,” and “Mongol.” Bertrand Guillet, director of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne History Museum, said, “We made the decision to stop this production in the name of the human, scientific and ethical values that we defend.” But now the exhibition is up and running, the first ever in France devoted to the great conqueror. It includes the rare exhibition of objects from Mongolia’s national collections, including many national treasures. —Clara Molot
