Chichén Itzá: Mayan Pyramids

Chichén Itzá, the Mayan temples that were once part of an ancient city, sits in the dreamlike province of Yucatán, in the midst of an arid, almost untouched landscape. The central temple, known as the Temple of Kukulcan, was home to the leaders of this civilization. Across the geometrical structures stone carvings can still be seen—the Temple of the Warriors and the Wall of the Skulls—dating back to the years during which the city thrived (from 600 to around 1200 A.D.) While visiting the complex in the current climate isn’t possible, this virtual website offers unhindered, 360-degree aerial views. —E.C.
