Chanel Miller: I Was, I Am, I Will Be

Asian Art Museum / San Francisco

“This piece serves as an homage to process, rather than outcome,” explains the California artist and writer Chanel Miller. “Healing happens when we are able to incorporate the full spectrum of our experiences and integrate our collective selves.” The victim of a sexual assault, and the author of Know My Name: A Memoir, Miller believes the lengthy healing process should be divided into three parts: “I was,” “I am,” “I will be.” Her first commissioned artwork for the museum, this three-part mural illustrates her vision, and is visible all the way from Hyde Street. —E.C.
