Cézanne and the Master Painters: A Dream of Italy

Feb 27, 2020 – Jan 3, 2021
2 Rue Louis Boilly, 75016 Paris, France

“Doubtless there are things in nature which have not yet been seen,” said the French painter Paul Cézanne. “If an artist discovers them, he opens the way for his successors.” True to his words, Cézanne took inspiration from the Italian masters who preceded him: Tintoretto, El Greco, Ribera, Giordano, and Poussin. His own artistic discoveries—specifically his nascent Cubism—in turn influenced Italian artists who came after him: Carrà, Sironi, Soffici, and Pirandello, not to mention Boccioni and Morandi. This rare exhibition places Cezanne in the context of Italian pioneers, from the 16th century to modern times. —E.C.
