Carlo Vitale: Early Works

Carlo Vitale, Cherry Hill, 1980–1991.

Apr 22 – June 3, 2022
6925 E Jefferson, Detroit, MI 48207

The painter Carlo Vitale says his life as an artist started one afternoon during his childhood. His mother was standing on their front porch in Detroit, watching as he and his father drove home in the family’s Dodge Rambler. Lightning struck a Dutch elm above the Rambler and the current charged under the car and shot it straight up into the air. “What I saw was, there was no color, the most brilliant light-color that could ever be imagined,” Vitale says. “What was dark in color was the most dark color that could be imagined.” This show features paintings—electric with color—made between 1978 and 1989, the first decade of Vitale’s nearly 40-year career. —Jensen Davis
