“I find the virtual world more interesting,” the Chinese installation artist Cao Fei told The White Review in 2016. “I really mean that. I can walk around, overhear conversations, speak to anyone I like. I feel freer there.” Not surprisingly, Cao Fei’s installations evoke parallel worlds, virtual realities, in which Cao constructs social experiments and fictional cities. Often, she looks forward to the future, depicting globalization’s dramatic effects. In her first major solo show in China, and her largest to date, works from a 20-year career are on view. —E.C.
