1960—the Majestic Theatre—Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot. Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, Robert Goulet, and Roddy McDowall are King Arthur, Guenevere, Lancelot, and Mordred. Scenic design was by the great Oliver Smith, and costumes came from the fashion designer Adrian, who called his work for the show “confectioner’s gothic.” And what a confection it was. Though Burton wasn’t known for singing, he had that voice and spoke-sung eloquently, as did Richard Harris in the 1967 film adaptation. Julie Andrews was coming off her triumph in My Fair Lady. And Robert Goulet was launched. Camelot now comes to Lincoln Center with a refreshed book by Aaron Sorkin. Andrew Burnap is Arthur, Phillipa Soo is Guenevere, and Jordan Donica is Lancelot. Bartlett Sher directs. —Laura Jacobs
