“To see is to know,” Bruce Katsiff has said. “To photograph is to learn.” During his 60-year career, Katsiff has been fascinated with what is within the human body. Born in Philadelphia to a butcher and a seamstress, he was drawn to scenes of death and decay that most found uncomfortable. Katsiff rejected the notion of taking “pretty pictures”; instead photographed challenging material such as animal carcasses. In 1989, he became the director of the Michener Art Museum, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a position he held until 2012. Katsiff’s latest exhibition, which traces the entirety of his career, is a homecoming. Over 60 photographs from five bodies of work go up at the museum he helped found. —Maggie Turner
