Brice Marden and Greek Antiquity

“Brice Marden and Greek Antiquity” at the Museum of Cycladic Art.

June 16 – Aug 29, 2022
Neofitou Douka 4, Athina 106 74, Greece

In 1971, the American artist Brice Marden took a summer studio on the Greek island of Hydra, in the Aegean Sea. Here he began doing paintings on marble, harmonizing his brushstrokes with the stone’s natural markings. Those first works established Marden as one of our foremost artists. Every year since, he’s returned to the small isle, enchanted by the clarity of the Greek light and the charms of the Aegean. Marden and his wife Helen are now in their 80s, but they continue their summer odyssey. This exhibition, Marden’s first in Greece, contains work spanning six decades and presents it with select antiquities from the museum’s collection. —Elena Clavarino
