Brandi Twilley: No Living

Aug 5 – Sept 13, 2020
179 E Broadway, New York, NY 10002, United States

Reviewing a 2016 exhibition of Brandi Twilley’s paintings, Johanna Fateman wrote in Artforum, “Twilley’s searching hand, an alternately softening and sharpening filter, makes this show feel uniquely truthful—an unfixed and incomplete account of an era and place, the result of a singularly rigorous and melancholy process.” That show was titled “The Living Room.” Twilley’s new show is titled “No Living,” and here the paintings address the artist’s first years in New York City, when she lived illegally in her art studio, making do without a kitchen or bathroom and fearing intruders at night. Twilley captures the dual nature of rooms—subdued by dailiness, home to a haunting subconscious. —L.J.
