The Arts Intel Report

Brahms, Rosendal Chamber Music Festival

Aug 10–13, 2023

For Johannes Brahms, Beethoven was “that giant whose steps I always hear behind me.” With that in mind, Norway’s Leif Ove Andsnes—impresario and superstar of the piano—follows up last summer’s long weekend of Beethoven in the Norwegian countryside with a parallel tribute to the composer who was always measuring himself by Beethoven’s yardstick. Among the international headliners that Andsnes has invited to join him: the Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger; the Canadian violinist James Ehnes; and the German baritone Matthias Goerne, heard in the uneven, intermittently transcendent faux-medievalist song cycle Die Schöne Magelone. —Matthew Gurewitsch
