War-torn Ukraine has faced accumulating problems. One of them has to do with its art collection, housed in Kyiv’s National Art Gallery. The museum’s holdings include 12th-century Byzantine artifacts (in gold), icons from the Middle Ages, works from the Ukrainian Baroque, and the largest collection of the country’s modern art. In the spring of 2022, Ukrainian officials asked the Kunstmuseum to keep the art safe, and further asked for the works to be exhibited there. As a result, 49 paintings by 31 Ukrainian artists are on view in this heartwarming display. —Elena Clavarino
