While today Frank Walter is acknowledged as one of the foremost Caribbean artists, he was impoverished and unknown during his life. Born on Horsford Hill, Antigua, in 1926, Walter was exceptionally bright from a young age. At 22, he became the first person of color to become a manager at the Antiguan Sugar Syndicate. He traveled across Europe from 1953 to 1961, a stint that left him deeply and permanently preoccupied with race, postcolonial society, and his own heritage. After moving back to Antigua in the 1960s, Walter sought solace in painting and lived away from society. He sold miniature landscapes to tourists to make a living, but his greater works—large-scale abstract and figurative paintings—were kept secret until his death. The focal point of this exhibition is Walter’s abstract “Milky Way Galaxy” series, an imaginative collection of paintings born of the artist’s fascination with the cosmos. —Paulina Prosnitz
