The big dance decade was the 1970s. It saw George Balanchine’s late masterpieces, Paul Taylor on the ascent, both A Chorus Line and Chicago opening on Broadway, and Saturday Night Fever in movie theaters. It was also a big decade for Bob Fosse, he of the bowler hat and insinuating hips. In the 70s, Fosse choreographed Pippin, Chicago, and the television special Liza with a Z (costumed by Halston); he directed the movies Cabaret and All That Jazz. In 1978, Fosse’s Tony-winning musical revue Dancin’ opened on Broadway with numbers to Bach, Sousa, Cat Stevens, Neil Diamond, and more. Now Dancin’ is coming back, directed by Wayne Cilento, who was in the original cast and has revised the show for a 21st-century audience. —Laura Jacobs
