Billie Holiday had one of those voices that could transport you. Here she is, singing about autumn in New York. Can you see the leaves? Can you feel the wistfulness? And here, in that hymn to heartbreak, she sings of stormy weather. A visionary, her life was marred by addiction. Holiday died at 44 in 1959. The Newark Museum presents Jerry Dantzic’s intimate photographs of the jazz and blues star, featuring commentary by master of letters Zadie Smith. —Sophie Kemp
