Arabesques and kaleidoscopes, rendered in punchy colors that hail Brazilian tradition, fill the canvases of Beatriz Milhazes. “I am seeking geometrical structures,” the artist has said, “but with freedom of form and imagery taken from different worlds.” Her world is Brazil, where she was born in 1960. But she readily acknowledges Sonia Delaunay, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Bridget Riley as influences. Milhazes is now 63 and one of the world’s most important abstract painters. The title of this exhibition, “Maresias,” refers to the salty ocean breeze that is part of life in Rio de Janeiro, her home town. Twenty paintings, as well as five works on paper from 1989, are on view. —Elena Clavarino
