“I am a scavenger of information,” Barbara Walker has said. “I tap into popular culture, the internet, Facebook, social media, archives. I collect and gather conversation. There is not just one viewpoint.” Known for her commitment to political activism, the Birmingham-based artist often tell the stories of those who’ve been misrepresented—prisoners, Britain’s African-Caribbean community, and people on the fringes of society. Her portraits, often done in graphite, can be as colossal in scale as the subjects they address.
