“I am a scavenger of information,” Barbara Walker has said. “I tap into popular culture, the internet, Facebook, social media, archives. I collect and gather conversation. There is not just one viewpoint.” Known for her commitment to political activism, the Birmingham-based artist often tell the stories of those who’ve been misrepresented—prisoners, Britain’s African-Caribbean community, and people on the fringes of society. Her portraits, often done in graphite, can be as colossal in scale as the subjects they address. In this exhibition, paintings, drawings, and works on paper explore issues such as class, race, and power. —Elena Clavarino
