“Listen,” Barbara Kruger once said, “our culture is saturated with irony whether we know it or not.” This is exactly the kind of statement that is characteristic of Kruger’s art. In installations, videos, and digital productions, she pairs images with provocative text, creating affirmations that use humor as a check on hypocrisy and cliché. Although this show at Serpentine features work reaching back to her early days (including some rarely seen “pasteups”), it is not a retrospective. Kruger is an artist who challenges everything, even the trajectory of her own career. For this exhibition she has revisited, rethought, and remade past works. —Elena Clavarino
