The Rouarts have long been art collectors. Henri Rouart was an important industrialist, and rubbed shoulders with Edgar Degas at the turn of the 20th century. His son, Ernest, married Julie Manet, the daughter of Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet. And Augustin Rouart, Henri’s nephew, grew up among the artists Renoir, Monet, and Debussy, and was himself a painter. “In the family there were two important traits that you don’t often find, goodness and a love of goodness,” Jean-Marie Rouart told The New York Times in 2004. “Their passion was art and they lived in their own world because they saw few outsiders.” This exhibition allows viewers into that world, with works from the family collection on view, as well as a recent donation from Jean-Marie Rouart: paintings by his grandfather, great-grandfather, and Henri Lerolle—12 in all. —E.C.
