Art Basel flourishes in the small Swiss town that is its namesake, but it also has outposts around the world. Thirty-two years ago, in 2002, it opened a Miami edition. By the time Design Miami opened, in 2005, to accommodate dozens of design galleries, the Miami edition of Basel was as fun as it was famous. Store openings, cocktail parties, and raves line the beach, where attendees range from Kim Kardashian to 50 Cent. Sculptures by Ugo Rondinone and Christopher Wool grace private museums, and other freestanding creations line the beachfront. This year, there will be a whopping 277 exhibitors from around the world at the fair itself, including the four mega galleries—David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Gagosian, and Pace Gallery. Don’t miss work by Johnny Depp, Yayoi Kusama, and Michael Chow (a.k.a. Mr. Chow), who says of his art, “The work speaks, so just look and then judge from there.” —Elena Clavarino
