There is nothing orthodox about Armando Nin’s style of painting. Where most artists are standing as they work on a canvas, taking acrylic or oil paint from a platter, Nin lies on the ground with his canvas suspended above him. And instead of paint, his material of choice is soot from the lit wick of a candle. Nin takes inspiration from the buon fresco murals of the Italian Renaissance and the concept of giornata—time translated into space within a composition. His large pieces explore the meaning of time through shadows and light. Nin’s first solo exhibition is now open at Foreign & Domestic. —Lucy Horowitz
