What if paintings were mediums—portals to alternate universes where one might encounter a celestial body, a thought, or a magnetic field in tangible form? The Los Angeles-native Ariana Papademetropoulos paints these imagined realms, which she calls ”umwelts“—sensory bubbles that both shape and limit our perceived realities. The title of this exhibition refers to Margot and Rudolf Wittkower’s 1963 book Born Under Saturn, which looks at Renaissance perceptions of artists, a time when people wondered whether they were eccentric, weird, or just influenced by astrology? —Elena Clavarino
