“We live in three places simultaneously: in the body, in the built world and on this earth,” the artist Antony Gormley said recently. “Increasingly, the second body (the built world), is the one that controls us the most.” In the reopening exhibition of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Gormley aims to re-contextualize this “second body,” liberating viewers from the effects of what the Japanese call the “culture of the chair.” He does this most powerfully with his central work, Run II, a sleek aluminum pipe that snakes around the room in straight lines and right angles, a linear echo of tabletops, doorways, and ceilings. It fills the entire space of the main gallery. —E.C.
