Annie Morris: When A Happy Thing Falls

Aug 27, 2021 – Feb 6, 2022
West Bretton, Wakefield WF4 4LG

The London-based artist Annie Morris is best known for her “Stack” series: colorful balls in bronze, foam, and copper that balance precariously one on top of another. She conceived the idea in 2014, after suffering through a miscarriage. “My sculptures are about holding onto something that’s fallen,” she has explained, “and to express the hope and defiance of life.” A former student of Giuseppe Penone, Morris carefully crafts her compositions, whether she works in tapestry, painting, or drawing, and drifts seamlessly between abstraction and representation. In this large survey, her thread paintings as well as a new series of sculptures are on view. —E.C.
