Andy Warhol: Revelation

Nov 19, 2021 – June 19, 2022
200 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn, NY 11238, USA

Andy Warhol grew up in a two-bedroom apartment in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Eastern European parents. Both his father and mother were members of the Byzantine Catholic church; consequently, Warhol was steeped in its symbolism and knew its liturgies. Though Warhol was unapologetically gay, faith never fully left his life. Indeed, Catholic rituals regularly appeared in his art. Think of his 1986 “Last Supper” series, which made waves, and his experimental film The Chelsea Girls, commissioned by the de Menil family in 1966, and funded by the Roman Catholic Church. Themes of life and death, power and desire are the focus of this exhibition. Drawings from Warhol’s mother, Julia Warhola, will also be on view. —E.C.
