An Alpine Symphony, by Richard Strauss

October 15, 2019
881 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019, USA

It expresses, wrote Richard Strauss, the “worship of eternal, magnificent nature.” At one point, in a nod to Nietzsche, it was going to be called The Antichrist. Strauss ultimately called his huge tone poem, premiered in 1915, An Alpine Symphony. Brought to you by The Philadelphia Orchestra, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting, the scene painting is tremendous. —L.J.

Also on the program: Piano Concerto No. 3, by Béla Bartók, pianist Hélène Grimaud; Umoja, by Valerie Coleman.
