Ten years ago, in July, Amy Winehouse’s shocking death made headlines around the world. Since then, the late artist has been the subject of multiple inquiries into her character, with drug abuse, boyfriends, and personal issues front and center. What went wrong? Why did she die? While this digging was justified, some of it was insensitive and misinformed. In response, Winehouse’s good friend, the photographer Phil Griffin, has mounted an exhibition that promises to showcase the real Amy—a vulnerable girl behind a tough facade. “My relationship with Amy was gentle,” says Griffin, “not rock-and-roll, nor dramatic or chaotic at all.” The portraits on display, in various formats, are both gorgeous and sensitive. —E.C.
