Amina Toure-K grew up in Ghana before moving to Columbus, Ohio. Her paintings draw on her personal journey from Africa to the Diaspora, and connect her experiences to a wide web of individuals. Intimate portraits tell shared stories of coping with new realities and coming to terms with alien cultures and traditions. At the core of her work, though, is Africa’s role as a bonding force in the lives of strangers. —Clara Molot
