Alice Tippit: Pallid Carrier

June 27 – Aug 29, 2020
673 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60642, United States

Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Times described Alice Tippit’s paintings as “visual poetry.” In fact, Tippit bases her work on poems, creating visual constellations out of tiny, hard-edged oil paintings. Each is in block colors, minimalist, and impeccably executed. Not one line seems to be amiss. For this series, Tippit has selected a poem by Frank O’Hara—1955’s “The Eyelid Has Its Storms”—as inspiration. Each image comes from the bizarre world O’Hara describes: “Purchase to dream, green eyeshadow, kohl, gonorrhea, of the currents at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.” —E.C.
