In a three-screen, 52-minute video installation, the Ghanaian-born British artist John Akomfrah tells the story of Africa’s declining elephant population. He frames their disheartening plight with the dramatic beauty of Africa’s natural landscapes and contemporary scenes of human migration. At times these three visual skeins line up to share the same image; otherwise they exist asynchronously, disjointed from one another. What we see resists easy categorization. The installation ultimately tracks a narrative that goes beyond the elephants, offering a nuanced exploration of destruction, fragmentation, and loss—both environmental and human—within the landscape of African cultural heritage. —Paulina Prosnitz
