The slender, stormy figures of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti are recognizable from a distance, but the idea for these long shadows came after W.W. II, late in the artist’s career. Giacometti began sculpting much earlier, at the age of 13, when he made the first model of his brother Diego. Growing up in the Swiss valley, Giacometti dedicated himself to realist work, and he pored over books of art history at school in Schiers and Geneva. This exhibition examines those early years, starting with his work as a teenager and leading up to his arrival in Paris, before he met André Breton. It’s an illuminating look at one of the 20th century’s most important artists. —Elena Clavarino
