For young men of the Koli caste, a tribal group located in the Gujarat region of India, the future has always resided in the sea. Koli have been fishermen for centuries, catching their bounty using the moon and tides. In Sarvnik Kaur’s documentary Against the Tide, we meet Rakesh and Ganesh, childhood best friends who’ve both become fishermen. Tensions arise as Ganesh makes use of innovative new technologies, while Rakesh, in his father’s dilapidated boat, sticks to the ancient Koli methods. Making matters worse is the catastrophic decline of the region’s fish population due to climate change. Moments of hopelessness—the heart condition of Rakesh’s son; Ganesh’s mounting debts—are set against the dramatic natural beauty of the Arabian sea. The result is a vivid, visceral, and intimate depiction of a waning way of life. —Paulina Prosnitz
