In 1905, Abraham Ángel Card Valdés was born in El Oro, Mexico. At 16, the two last names came off after his brother expelled him from the family home. Why? Because he insisted on enrolling at La Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. Around the same time, amid family turmoil, Ángel embarked on an intense affair with his tutor Manuel Rodríguez Lozano. The pair lived together for two years, until 1924, when Rodríguez Lozano abandoned Ángel for another young and handsome artist. Later that year, Ángel, only 19, was found dead. It remains unclear whether the cause was an accidental cocaine overdose or suicide. Including nearly all of Ángel’s surviving work, this exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art explores his paintings, compelling in the Mexican Modernist style. —Elena Clavarino
