Hanya Yanagihara’s best-selling second novel, A Little Life, tells the story of four lives over three decades. Set in New York City, four friends—a lawyer, an actor, an architect, an artist—fall in and out of closeness as they go from college graduates to middle-aged men. The book was long-listed for the Booker Prize and a finalist for a National Book Award. In 2018, Ivo van Hove and his theater company, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, brought the book to the stage. The adaptation was by Koen Tachelet and Van Hove directed (he also directs this U.S. premiere at BAM). The epic lasts just over four hours. Beware, there’s a dark secret within. —Jensen Davis
