Saba was 19 when she married the man she loved. In Pakistan, the decision to follow her heart almost cost Saba her life. Her father and uncle did not approve of the union and decided Saba had compromised the family’s honor. They shot her in the head, put her in bag, and threw her into a river. Miraculously, Saba survived, escaping a fate met by over 1,000 women each year in Pakistan, all in the name of family honor. Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy read Saba’s story in the local paper and rushed to the hospital where she was recovering. Obaid-Chinoy won the Best Documentary Short category in 2016 for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. She says her win shows “what happens when determined women get together.” —Clara Molot
