The sardonic first seasons of The White Lotus featured uncomfortable dialogue, spoiled characters, and unpredictable twists and turns. In Season Three, Mike White’s dark comedy-drama unfolds in Thailand, at the Four Seasons hotel on the island of Koh Samui. As in the second season, a murder occurs within the first few minutes. We hear the sound of gunshots, but the victim remains unseen. The story then rewinds to the arrival of a new cast of vacationers—among them, Parker Posey, Michelle Monaghan, and Patrick Schwarzenegger. An unsettling and impalpable tension simmers between each group: a tech-obsessed family, unhappy to discover their hotel is a phone-free wellness retreat; a group of childhood friends, just one of whom has achieved fame; and a couple—a man with a chip on his shoulder and his younger, free-spirited girlfriend. Natasha Rothwell, the only returning cast member, reprises her role as Belinda, the spa manager from Season One. —Jeanne Malle
