A Fire in My Belly is the name of an unfinished film by the American artist David Wojnarowicz. A distillation of dreamlike imagery and driving anger, it was created between 1986 and 87, a time of dissent and polarization brought on by the AIDS epidemic and the 80s culture wars. Inspired by the dark footage, the curator Lisa Long has put together works from 30 artists who explore violence and loss. Painting, video, sculpture, and poetry come from artists such as Arthur Jafa, Anne Imhof, Adrian Piper, and Barbara Hammer. These are windows into difficult subjects, views from different backgrounds and generations. —E.C.
