While Joan Miró was painting in an 18th-century Mallorcan country estate, Francis Bacon was holed up in London, amidst dust and dirt, sketching twisted figures near a replica plaster of William Blake’s head. Meanwhile, Barbara Hepworth was at home in the town of St Ives in Cornwall, forging monumental sculptures in her outdoor studio. This exhibition focuses on 100 years of studio practice—and what constitutes a studio. A kitchen? A foyer? A yard? One hundred works by over 80 artists are here—among them Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Egon Schiele, and Andy Warhol. In some rooms, “studio corners” reconstruct the artists’ crucibles of creation. —E.C.
