Just over 50 years ago, in 1971, Lucy R. Lippard did something unprecedented. At the Aldrich Museum, she curated a show that placed 26 women in the limelight—and left men out. The show was called “Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists,” and in the introduction catalogue Lippard flippantly wrote, “I have no clear picture of what, if anything, constitutes ‘women’s art,’ although I am convinced that there is a latent difference in sensibility; and vive la difference.” The groundbreaking show has now been revived, but with an additional 26 new female and non-binary artists. The exhibition fills the museum’s entire space. —Elena Clavarino
