100 Foot Wave

Streaming on HBO

Surfing is generally a laid-back sport of longboards and spring suits. Another order entirely are the daredevils of the big waves. Water as tall as skyscrapers requires helmets, backguards, and Jet Skis (to carry you out, and rescue you if you fall). It’s a thrilling world with staggering stakes, one that legendary surfers such as Garrett McNamara have helped bring into the spotlight in places like Mavericks, just north of Half Moon Bay, California, and Nazaré, a small fishing village on the coast of Portugal. This six-part documentary series follows the quest of 53-year-old McNamara—who holds the record for the largest wave ever surfed (78 feet)—to conquer a 100-footer. —J.V.
