Few know Vienna better than the hotelier Alexandra Winkler. Since the 1930s, her family has owned the Hotel Sacher—the birthplace of the world-renowned Original Sacher-Torte, a dense chocolate sponge cake with apricot jam.

With its stately Neo-Renaissance façade, the Austro-Hungarian landmark sits across from the Vienna State Opera and near the Albertina museum, drawing visitors to its café day and night.

Every February, the hotel hosts the Vienna Opera Ball, transforming its chandelier-lit halls with floral displays and waltzes in a spectacle broadcast to millions—and Winkler, as manager, oversees it all.

Here, she shares her favorite places to eat, see, and shop in her home city.

J. & L. Lobmeyr

Lobmeyr, the glassware maker, holds a special place in my heart. The Hotel Sacher and Lobmeyr have shared a history since Anna Sacher’s ownership of the hotel in the 19th century. Lobmeyr made one of the first-ever electronic chandeliers for the Hotel Sacher, exemplifying their modern and stylish vision. These chandeliers can still be admired in their original condition in the Grüne Bar, Rote Bar, Blaue Bar, and the Marble Hall. (lobmeyr.at)
