The title of Yoan Capote’s latest exhibition is not arbitrary. Born in Cuba in 1977, during Fidel Castro’s rule, Capote seeks to emulate the beauty of the island’s surrounding waters, while also telling the darker story of those who sought escape from a dictatorship only to face death and despair along the way. Capote presents the ocean as it is: magnificent, limitless. These oils are quite different from his industrial sculptures, which emphasize man-made creations such as shoes and chairs. A sculptor at heart and in practice, Capote’s works in “See Escapes” are hardly paintings even though they are presented as such. They utilize saw blades, fish hooks, and barbed wire. —Zack Hauptman
