Alban Berg’s first opera, Wozzeck, was acclaimed as a modernist masterpiece. Premiered in 1925, it tells the story of a common soldier bewildered by his world and cuckolded by his wife. In 2019, a darkly artful and expressionistic production designed by the South African artist William Kentridge premiered at the Met. Visually stunning, if desolate and demanding, it now comes to the Paris Opéra with Matthias Goerne as Wozzeck and Susanna Mälkki on the podium. —Laura Jacobs
