Appropriately enough, the first in this thoughtfully curated five-part concert series showcases Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey), performed by Nikolay Borchev with Wu Han at the piano. Usually a program unto itself, that incantatory masterpiece is paired with Beethoven’s op. 135, the sixteenth and last of his immortal string quartets. The remaining evenings range widely through Schubert’s inexhaustible catalogue. The fourth concert, entitled “Schubert Forever” (February 3) mixes it up with complementary selections by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Previn, Ernst, Mahler, Korngold, and Harbison. —Matthew Gurewitsch
