Weimar Berlin: To the Cabaret!

September 23, 2019
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, South Bank, London SE1 8XX, UK

Put down the knitting, the book, and the broom. This program conjures the between-the-wars sound of that bustling, subversive city, Berlin. Kurt Weill is here, of course, but also Friedrich Hollaender, who composed some of history’s greatest cabaret songs, including 1930’s “Falling in Love Again (Can’t Help It).” Screen projections of film, photographs, paintings, letters, and diaries bring a precarious era to life. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts. —L.J.
