Weh Dem? De Sparrow Catcher?

Cyle Warner, I Don’t Want To Go, 2023.

July 27 – Sept 18, 2023
33 Herkimer St, Brooklyn, NY 11216

In his first exhibition at the Welancora Gallery, Cyle Warner, a mere 21 years old, poses a central question: What would life be like if there had been no migration to the United States? Warner was born in New York City and is of Afro-Caribbean descent. Family photos from the Warner home in the West Indies are the artist’s starting point in his search for answers. Warner layers, recomposes, and enlarges these images to infuse his ancestors’ lives—and pasts—with new narratives. In doing so, he forms firsthand experiences from secondhand memories. —Clara Molot
